Quick Read

  • ChatGPT Health is now available to all US users, allowing integration with Apple Health and various medical providers.
  • The desktop app for macOS and Windows now supports the advanced GPT-Live voice mode.
  • Desktop users can now utilize 'Computer Use' skills to interact with local files and manage multi-step workflows.
  • MacOS users gain 'Appshots' capability to let the AI reference the active window for improved context.
  • New project management features allow for organizing local folders and automatic discovery of project-specific configurations.

New Capabilities for Desktop and Health Integration

OpenAI has officially introduced two major updates to its ecosystem: the broad rollout of the ChatGPT Health feature for users in the United States and the expansion of its advanced voice capabilities to the ChatGPT desktop application. These updates, announced on July 24, 2026, represent a significant shift in how users interact with AI for both personal wellness management and professional workflow automation.

The ChatGPT Health feature, which previously existed as an early-access pilot, is now available to all U.S.-based users across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro tiers. The tool allows users to securely connect their medical records and wellness data from platforms like Apple Health, One Medical, Function Health, Kaiser Permanente, and UC Health. By centralizing this information, the AI can provide context-aware summaries, track health trends over time, and assist in preparing for medical appointments.

Advanced Voice Mode Moves to Desktop

Parallel to the health rollout, OpenAI has integrated its new “GPT-Live” voice mode into the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS and Windows. This feature, which previously debuted on mobile platforms, enables seamless, turn-based natural conversation. Unlike previous iterations of voice mode that required waiting for the AI to finish speaking, the new interface handles interruptions, allowing users to pause or slow down the assistant in real-time.

The desktop implementation is notably more powerful than its mobile counterpart. By leveraging OpenAI’s “Computer Use” skills, the app can now interact with local files, navigate websites, and execute tasks across the operating system. For macOS users, the integration includes “Appshots,” a feature that allows the AI to reference the active window in focus, providing a visual context that aids in complex task completion.

Operational Enhancements and Workflow Integration

Beyond voice and health, the desktop update includes improvements to project management within the app. Users can now organize local projects into multiple related folders. The application automatically detects project-specific files like AGENTS.md and config.toml, streamlining the workflow for developers and professional users who utilize ChatGPT for coding and document management.

OpenAI’s decision to move health features out of a “siloed” environment into general conversations stems from internal usage data. The company reported that over 70 percent of health-related inquiries occurred during casual interactions, such as meal planning or scheduling, rather than in the dedicated health section. By allowing the AI to consider dietary restrictions or recent injuries during standard dialogue, OpenAI aims to provide a more integrated and helpful user experience.
