  • EU imports of Chinese AC units rose 43% to .8bn in H1 2026.
  • UK imports of cooling units jumped 74% by May year-on-year.
  • Beijing cites high demand to challenge EU tariff policies on industrial goods.

European demand for Chinese cooling appliances has spiked significantly during the first half of 2026, driven by intense heatwaves across the continent. According to data reported by Chinese state media, air conditioner exports to the European Union surged by 43%, reaching a total value of $3.8 billion.

Independent analysis from the China Data Portal indicates that Britain saw a 74% increase in imports of air conditioning units and parts in the five months ending in May, significantly outpacing other European markets, which reported growth between 27% and 63%. Retailers report high demand for portable “single-split” units, with wholesalers like Joybuy noting a 42-fold increase in sales for specific models during late June.

Beijing has used these figures to challenge Brussels’ ongoing debates regarding potential tariffs on Chinese goods. While the European Commission has explored measures to protect domestic industries from what it characterizes as state-subsidized overcapacity, Chinese state media outlets, including the China Daily, have framed the influx of affordable cooling technology as a “lifeline” for European citizens rather than an economic threat.

Manufacturers such as Midea have reported a 70% year-on-year increase in sales of their portable cooling units in Western Europe. Industry experts suggest that as extreme weather events become more frequent, European reliance on these supply chains is likely to persist despite broader geopolitical tensions surrounding trade policy.
