Quick Read

  • Prince Harry is visiting London for five days starting July 7, 2026.
  • Meghan Markle and their children will not join him due to denied police protection.
  • The security dispute stems from the 2020 decision to downgrade the couple's royal protection status.
  • Harry continues to challenge the security arrangements in UK courts.

Prince Harry is set to arrive in London for a five-day visit starting July 7, 2026, but he will be traveling without his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet. The change in travel plans follows a formal request for taxpayer-funded security during their stay, which was denied by the UK authorities.

According to reports verified by CNN and other major outlets, Harry’s team had been exploring options to ensure the family’s safety, but the lack of official police protection rendered a family visit to the capital untenable. While the Duke of Sussex will proceed with his scheduled engagements, including the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, the status of the rest of the family’s participation in other parts of the UK remains uncertain.

The Security Impasse

The core of the dispute centers on the decision by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) to downgrade Harry’s security status following his decision to step back from royal duties in 2020. Last year, the Duke lost a legal challenge in the UK Court of Appeal regarding this decision. His legal team continues to argue that the risk to his family remains high and that an independent assessment by the Risk Management Board, which was deemed necessary last November, has not yet occurred.

A spokesperson for the Duke stated, “The issue has never been accommodation. The issue is whether appropriate and proportionate protective security is being provided throughout the entirety of the visit.” Conversely, the UK government maintains that its protective security system is “rigorous and proportionate” and adheres to a long-standing policy of not disclosing specific arrangements to maintain their integrity.

Institutional and Personal Stakes

This trip was widely anticipated as a potential opportunity for King Charles III to reunite with his grandchildren. The King has not seen Archie and Lilibet in the UK since the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022. The ongoing tension over security continues to serve as a significant barrier between the Sussexes and the Royal Family, as well as the British government.

While Harry and the King have maintained limited contact, the logistical hurdles of these visits highlight the persistent strain of the couple’s exit from royal life. As Harry prepares for his solo engagements, the situation underscores that until a formal resolution on security protocols is reached, the prospects for a full family reunion on British soil remain slim.
