Public Appeal Over Upcoming Film Depiction
Crystal Harris, the widow of late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, has publicly called on actor Jessica Biel to reject a role in the upcoming Hollywood feature film Boston Herald. In an open message shared on Instagram, Harris posted a screenshot of a direct message sent directly to Biel, asking her to reconsider participating in a project that she fears might romanticize the controversial publishing mogul and the wider Playboy culture.
The upcoming production, titled Playmates, is billed as a coming-of-age drama set within the confines of the Playboy Mansion. According to production details reported by industry outlets, the story is loosely based on childhood experiences written about by writer and director Laura Nicholson, whose parents are actor Jack Nicholson and actress Rebecca Broussard. The film features Bill Pullman as Hugh Hefner, alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Indiana Elle in leading roles.
Memoir Revelations and Personal History
In her message to Biel, Harris drew directly from her own years inside the mansion, pointing to what she described as deep systemic harm. Harris married Hefner in 2013 when she was 26 and he was 86, remaining his third and final wife until his death in 2017 at the age of 91. In 2024, she published a memoir titled Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself, in which she detailed experiences of emotional, physical, and financial control during her time in his orbit The Independent.
“Please reconsider playing Hugh Hefner’s ‘wife’ if this film intends to romanticize him or the Playboy world,” Harris wrote in her public statement. She emphasized that her marital experience involved severe distress, noting further that numerous other women have come forward over the years with serious allegations spanning coercion, exploitation, assault, and troubling concerns involving minors.
Broader Cultural Reckoning and Hollywood Responsibility
The public plea highlights an ongoing cultural debate surrounding the depiction of historical figures linked to institutional misconduct. In recent years, public scrutiny of the Playboy enterprise has intensified significantly, catalyzed by investigative reporting and documentary projects such as the 2022 docuseries Secrets of Playboy, which cataloged wide-ranging allegations from former models and associates.
Harris urged everyone involved in the production of Playmates to listen carefully to the women who lived through the environment before allowing major studio projects to repackage historical trauma as nostalgic entertainment. Representatives for Jessica Biel have not yet issued a public response to the appeal, and production schedules for the film continue to move forward amidst heightened public attention.
