A Historic Meltdown
The San Antonio Spurs find themselves on the brink of elimination after a staggering 107-106 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday. Despite building a 29-point lead, the Spurs suffered the largest comeback collapse in league history, with veteran guard De’Aaron Fox at the center of the controversy.
The Critical Error
With 15 seconds remaining and San Antonio holding a one-point lead, Fox secured a loose ball following a defensive stop by Victor Wembanyama. Rather than draining the clock or forcing a foul, Fox attempted a contested layup against OG Anunoby. The shot was blocked, fueling a Knicks transition that culminated in Anunoby’s game-winning tip-in with 1.2 seconds left.
“I just thought I’d be able to outrun him,” Fox told reporters after the game. The decision was immediately met with sharp criticism, including from NBA legend Charles Barkley, who labeled the sequence as “bonehead play” and criticized the team’s overall decision-making during the second half.
Stakes for the Spurs
The performance has raised questions about Fox’s role as the team’s highest-paid player. While the Spurs’ roster is notoriously young, it was the veteran Fox who appeared overwhelmed. As the series shifts to Game 5 on June 13, the Spurs must overcome a 3-1 deficit, with significant pressure mounting on their All-Star guard to justify his max contract and stabilize the team’s championship hopes.
