A Slow Start and a Decisive Defensive Shift
The Detroit Pistons opened their 2026-27 NBA campaign with a statement victory, overcoming a deficit of more than 20 points against the Boston Celtics to secure a 121-113 win. Despite falling heavily behind early in the contest, the home team rallied by altering its defensive priorities. According to a Yahoo Sports report, the Pistons made the deliberate decision to allow Paul George to score 38 points in his Celtics debut in order to completely stifle Jayson Tatum on the perimeter.
Fourth-year wing Ausar Thompson was tasked with disrupting, frustrating, and harassing Tatum throughout the night. The defensive gamble paid off as Tatum managed just 13 points on 6-for-23 shooting from the field. Furthermore, Thompson held Tatum completely scoreless from beyond the arc on all seven of his three-point attempts, forcing Boston’s offense into an unbalanced rhythm.
Thompson’s Two-Way Impact and Praise from Teammates
Beyond his defensive assignments on Tatum, Thompson contributed significantly on the offensive end, recording a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. His performance featured several highlight-reel plays, including a 360-degree lay-up in the second quarter and a fast-break transition pass to John Collins in the opening period. His all-around contributions earned high praise from teammate Jalen Duren following the final buzzer.
"AT has been working his tail off, just over the years he’s put in so much work," Duren said, as reported by Yahoo Sports. "He’s a gym rat. He’s a guy who just consistently wants to get better. He’s a guy who loves the game, so I’m not surprised about his progression. I think he’ll only continue to get better."
Clutch Execution and Looking Ahead to Miami
Despite his overall strong showing, Thompson still exhibited some of the offensive hesitations seen during the previous playoffs, passing up an open perimeter shot when left unguarded by the Celtics. However, he atoned for it in the game’s final minute. With Detroit leading by four points, Thompson drove into the lane, used a pump-fake to catch Neemias Queta in the air, and sank a tough jumper to seal the outcome.
Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has continually emphasized the value of adaptability, a trait Thompson displayed while guarding multiple positions and fulfilling various offensive roles. With a 1-0 record to start the year, the Pistons will enjoy a couple of days of rest before traveling to Florida for an 8 p.m. matchup against the Miami Heat on Friday, Oct. 23.
