Consolidating Streaming Leadership

The Walt Disney Company has initiated a major restructuring of its direct-to-consumer (DTC) division, naming Adam Smith as the new Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer for Disney Entertainment. This move marks a significant consolidation of the company’s streaming strategy, bringing product, engineering, advertising technology, and programming under a single leadership umbrella, according to What’s On Disney Plus.

The underlying reporting is available from whatsondisneyplus.com.

Smith, who joined Disney in 2024, previously served as Co-President of Direct-to-Consumer and Chief Product & Technology Officer. In his new expanded role, he will oversee Disney+ and Hulu, including data analytics, viewer experience, and global partnerships. The change simplifies a previously complex reporting structure where multiple executives oversaw various elements of the DTC experience, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Strategic Shifts in Content and Personnel

Alongside Smith’s elevation, Disney announced that Joe Earley will move into a newly created role: President, Disney Entertainment Television Franchise and Content Strategy. Earley, a key figure in the launch of Disney+ and a former President of Hulu, will now focus on the strategic development of television franchises, international originals, and creative talent development.

The leadership shuffle coincides with further personnel adjustments within the division. Eric Schrier, a 26-year veteran of FX and Disney, is stepping down from his post as head of DTC international originals and emerging media to enter a producing partnership with Disney Entertainment Television. Additionally, the division saw the departure of Disney+ President Alisa Bowen earlier this summer, who left to become CEO of Fubo.

The Path Forward for Disney Streaming

The appointment of Smith, a former long-time executive at Google and YouTube, signals a continued emphasis on the technology and product side of Disney’s streaming operations. Dana Walden, President and Chief Creative Officer of The Walt Disney Company, noted that Smith’s work in building a global team and enhancing the Disney+ user experience was instrumental in his promotion.

For Disney, the goal remains integrating its vast content ecosystem into a singular, seamless viewer experience. Smith stated that his vision involves making Disney+ the primary connection point for fans to engage with the full breadth of the company’s intellectual property. As the company continues to navigate the evolving streaming landscape, the new structure is designed to maximize the value of its franchises while maintaining operational agility.
