Soap opera veteran Don Diamont recently shared an emotional reflection on his 2009 departure from The Young and the Restless (Y&R) and the professional advocacy that paved the way for his next role. Speaking on the Soapy podcast, Diamont credited fellow actor Heather Tom with playing a pivotal, secret role in his transition to the sister series The Bold and the Beautiful (B&B).
After two decades of playing the ambitious executive Brad Carlton, Diamont was abruptly fired from Y&R. The dismissal, which he described as occurring “out of nowhere,” culminated in his character’s death on the February 5, 2009, episode. Diamont has previously characterized the firing as “scary” and noted the difficult timing, as he was released the day before Thanksgiving.
The Role of Peer Advocacy
While showrunner Bradley Bell initiated the move to bring Diamont to The Bold and the Beautiful, Diamont revealed that Heather Tom—a six-time Emmy Award winner—was a decisive voice in the process. When Tom learned of the potential casting, she reportedly reached out to Bell to advocate for his inclusion, typing a message that she wanted to work with Diamont.
“That to me is an Emmy,” Diamont joked during the podcast, emphasizing that he considers their professional bond “the greatest blessing of my professional life.” The two actors had previously worked together during Tom’s tenure as Victoria Newman on Y&R, establishing a history that laid the groundwork for their current partnership.
Reflecting on Four Decades
Diamont, who began his career in 1984 on Days of Our Lives, noted that his time in the industry has been marked by both sudden departures and lasting relationships. He expressed deep gratitude for the support system within the daytime drama community, particularly his ongoing collaboration with Tom. According to Diamont, Tom’s decision to advocate for him was “enormously flattering” and a testament to the collaborative nature of the industry.
