Influencer Emilie Kiser has issued a formal apology after social media users raised concerns regarding a video showing her 16-month-old toddler, Theodore, on a boat without a life jacket. The footage, which was originally shared by fellow influencer Madi Curtis during a joint family holiday in Spain, depicted the toddler sitting on a man’s lap while the vessel was in motion. Under Spanish law, children under the age of 13 are strictly required to wear life jackets while on the deck of any moving recreational boat.
The incident drew immediate criticism due to the family’s history. In May 2025, Kiser’s three-year-old son, Trigg, died after drowning in the family’s backyard pool in Arizona. A subsequent police report revealed that the toddler had been unsupervised for nine minutes and in the water for seven, noting that the pool lacked a protective fence at the time of the accident.
The Intersection of Tragedy and Accountability
Responding to the backlash, Kiser acknowledged the validity of the public’s frustration. “We are painfully aware that in a matter of seconds, your entire life can change, and we should have done better,” she wrote in a public statement. She noted that she recognizes the “deep level of anger and hurt” directed toward her family, adding that she shares the grief over the loss of her eldest son.
Kiser, who is currently pregnant with her third child, emphasized that while she strives to be a better parent, she remains human and fallible. “We will continue to do better, advocate for better and as hard as we try to avoid them, still make mistakes,” she stated. Her comments reflect a broader, ongoing struggle to balance her public-facing career as a lifestyle influencer with the private trauma of her family’s loss.
Sharenting and Safety Ethics
The incident has reignited debates regarding the ethics of “sharenting”—the practice of influencers sharing intimate details of their children’s lives for public consumption. Critics argue that when influencers document daily activities, they are held to a higher standard of safety, particularly when past public tragedies have established a high-stakes context for their parenting decisions.
In a June interview with podcaster Jay Shetty, Kiser had previously discussed her approach to moving forward, stating she chooses to focus on being the best mother she can for her surviving son. However, this recent lapse has demonstrated the difficulty of maintaining that image while under intense public scrutiny.
