Fidji Simo, the executive overseeing OpenAI’s AGI deployment, announced she will not return to her full-time role at the company. Simo, who had been on medical leave since April to manage a chronic neuroimmune condition known as POTS, stated that her recovery process requires more time and focus than initially anticipated.
Simo will transition to a part-time advisory role, effectively ending her tenure as one of the tech industry’s most influential leaders. During her time at OpenAI, she managed a significant portion of the company’s workforce and business operations, including the development of its AI-integrated products. Her departure marks a notable shift in leadership, with her responsibilities being redistributed among existing executives, including President Greg Brockman and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon.
Simo’s exit has prompted broader discussions regarding the intersection of women’s health and career longevity in high-pressure sectors. Reflecting on her decision, Simo noted the difficulty of stepping away from rare, high-stakes opportunities, a challenge often compounded for women in technology. Her work at OpenAI included the development of tools like ChatGPT Health, which sought to improve the security of AI-assisted medical consultations.
