Met Éireann, Ireland’s national weather agency, has issued a Status Orange thunderstorm warning for counties Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon, effective until 8:00 p.m. local time this Friday. The alert follows a period of extreme heat that has gripped the region, with temperatures hovering near historic June records.
The agency warned that the atmospheric instability could result in lightning strikes, hail damage, and localized flooding. These conditions pose a significant risk to public infrastructure, including potential disruptions to electricity, water, gas, and telecommunications networks. ESB Networks reported that approximately 8,000 customers were already without power by mid-morning Friday due to initial lightning activity.
While temperatures in the Republic of Ireland reached up to 31.7°C in nearby Athenry on Thursday, the current heatwave—defined by five consecutive days exceeding 25°C—is now being tempered by these violent convective storms. The National Severe Weather and Flooding Co-ordination Group has advised the public to exercise caution, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and remain vigilant regarding the safety of vulnerable individuals.
Driving conditions are expected to be hazardous due to gusty winds and reduced visibility. Authorities are urging residents to remain indoors during the peak of the storms and to monitor local updates for further extensions to the weather warnings.
