Heist Timeline and Modus Operandi
A high-stakes manhunt is currently underway in Malaysia following a brazen armed robbery at a goldsmith shop within the SkyAvenue Mall in Genting Highlands. The incident, which occurred on the morning of August 17, 2026, saw three masked male suspects execute a precision theft in under two minutes. According to reports from the New Straits Times and The Star, the suspects arrived at the popular resort destination in a BMW. Armed with an axe and crowbars, the group smashed through display cases, successfully extracting five trays containing 81 pieces of jewellery and gold bars, with a total estimated value of RM1.7 million.
At the time of the robbery, which took place at 11:40 am, no security guards were present at the store. While two employees—a man and a woman—were on duty, they were unable to prevent the swift actions of the perpetrators. A third staff member was on a scheduled break when the incident occurred. No injuries were reported, but the audacity of the daylight heist has prompted immediate scrutiny of security protocols at the resort.
Police Response and ‘Ops Tutup’
The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) launched a coordinated response shortly after the robbery. Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob confirmed that the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Pahang CID, and Bentong CID have combined resources to track the suspects. By noon on the day of the incident, police initiated ‘Ops Tutup,’ a strategic operation that involved sealing all entry and exit points leading to and from the highlands.
Despite the rapid deployment of roadblocks, early investigations indicate that the suspects’ vehicle had already cleared security checkpoints before the lockdown was fully enacted. CCTV footage currently under review by investigators suggests the trio fled the scene immediately following the theft. Publicly circulated videos show the suspects fleeing the mall on foot, while separate footage captures the subsequent traffic congestion as the police search intensified.
Security Concerns and Next Steps
The absence of a security guard at the time of the robbery has emerged as a focal point of public concern. Investigations are ongoing, with police reviewing extensive CCTV evidence to identify the suspects, who were masked and wearing caps during the commission of the crime. Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and the investigation remains active as they attempt to trace the vehicle and the stolen goods.
