A new global study has exposed a critical paradox at the heart of corporate technology integration: while artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly relied upon to verify and validate operational data, the rapid proliferation of AI-generated misinformation is simultaneously emerging as a top-tier security threat. Published in the International SOS Risk Outlook 2026 Pulse Check, the research reveals that nearly 60% of surveyed risk professionals believe AI’s greatest value lies in verifying and validating information from multiple sources, highlighting its growing role in helping organizations navigate highly volatile operating environments.

However, this optimism is heavily countered by growing vulnerabilities. More than four in ten respondents (42%) admitted that their organization has either been directly affected by false, misleading, or unverified information related to health, wellbeing, or security risks, or currently lacks the operational visibility to determine whether such misinformation has had an impact. Risk professionals identified synthetic content, fake signals causing operational uncertainty, and AI-powered impersonation as major threats to organizational credibility and decision-making.

Regional Vulnerabilities and the Threat to Public Health

The challenges are particularly acute in high-adoption markets like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where public and private sectors are integrating AI at an accelerated pace. Cybersecurity experts in the region have warned that AI-driven disinformation campaigns and deepfakes are no longer theoretical threats but active tools capable of eroding trust, disrupting daily operations, and misdirecting corporate leadership during crises.

The threat is not limited to corporate reputation; it poses severe risks to public health and emergency response. Dr. Irene Lai, Global Medical Director at International SOS, raised alarms over a highly sophisticated trend: deepfakes featuring real healthcare professionals spreading false information during disease outbreaks. Dr. Lai characterized this development as a digital form of biowarfare, capable of causing widespread panic and disrupting emergency medical responses without the deployment of physical biological agents.

Structural Bottlenecks and Slow Response Times

The report also underscores broader structural weaknesses in corporate governance that amplify these AI-related risks. Despite the volatile global landscape, only 10% of surveyed organizations reported being able to respond “very quickly” to newly identified risks. While 68% described their response speed as “fairly quick,” one in five (20%) admitted they are not quick to respond at all, exposing a critical resilience gap.

Furthermore, internal governance remains fragmented. Approximately 17% of respondents expressed lack of clarity regarding the operational steps required after a new risk is identified, and 25% admitted they lack clear escalation triggers. Only about 20% of organizations reported having a highly clear understanding of how local and global response processes align during a crisis. According to the report, these internal inefficiencies lead to duplicated efforts, inconsistent corporate messaging, and severe employee burnout.

The Necessity of Human-Led Integration

Industry experts emphasize that technology alone cannot resolve these governance deficits. Cvete Koneska, Global Security Director at International SOS, noted that while AI excels at rapidly surfacing and prioritizing vast amounts of data, the final verification process must remain a human responsibility. Koneska warned that over-reliance on automated AI capabilities can delay critical decisions affecting employee health, safety, and physical security, advocating instead for a strict human-in-the-loop framework.

James Wood, Security Director for Northern Europe at International SOS, added that the primary obstacle for modern enterprises is no longer identifying risks, but executing timely decisions. Wood observed that many corporate structures remain designed for stability rather than volatility, leaving them poorly equipped to act with the speed required in an era of rapid, AI-amplified disruptions.
