Dr. Lewis E. Dodley Sr., a pillar of the Columbus, Ohio, community who was affectionately known to many as “Baba,” passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 85. According to an obituary published by Diehl-Whittaker Funeral Services, Dr. Dodley leaves behind a legacy defined by his commitment to education, family, and the mentorship of local youth.
Born on December 25, 1940, in Columbus, Dr. Dodley was a lifelong resident of the city. He was raised on the East Side, specifically in the Talmadge Alley area, a formative environment that he credited with shaping his deep, enduring connection to the community. After graduating from East High School, he pursued higher education at Otterbein College and eventually earned a Ph.D. in psychology and guidance counseling from The Ohio State University in 1981.
Legacy of Mentorship
Throughout his career, Dr. Dodley served as an educator and counselor. His work was characterized by a focus on strengthening families and providing guidance to young people, particularly those he felt were often overlooked or marginalized by societal structures. His influence spanned multiple generations, earning him the title of “Baba”—a term of respect and affection used by friends, mentees, and community members alike.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Dodley was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his wife, Charlene, and his children: Lewis Jr., Mark, Imani, Felicia, Lisette, Leland, Michael Jr., and Traci. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Constance “Connie” Jenkins, and his parents, Gilbert Blossie Dodley and Luetta Jean Stewart.
Funeral Arrangements
The community will have an opportunity to pay their respects during visitation services scheduled for Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the Second Baptist Church in Columbus. Visitation is set to take place from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, with funeral services to follow immediately. Following the service, Dr. Dodley will be laid to rest at Green Lawn Cemetery.
