An Unforeseen Absence
Ireland’s preparations for the upcoming Nations Championship tour have suffered a significant blow, with star fly-half Jack Crowley emerging as a major doubt for the summer tests. Munster head coach Clayton McMillan confirmed on June 12, 2026, that the 25-year-old has been diagnosed with a blood vessel issue in his leg, effectively sidelining him for the immediate future.
Crowley, who has been a central figure in Ireland’s tactical setup, has not appeared for his province since April 18. According to McMillan, while the diagnosis provides clarity on the nature of the discomfort, the recovery timeline remains highly unpredictable.
Tactical Uncertainty
“Jack, I don’t anticipate he’ll be involved in the early part of the internationals,” McMillan told the Irish Examiner. He noted that unlike a standard musculoskeletal injury, the condition is obscure, meaning it could resolve rapidly or require a more extended recovery period of one to two months.
This development forces Ireland head coach Andy Farrell to reconsider his options ahead of the squad announcement scheduled for Wednesday. Ireland is set to face a challenging series, with fixtures against Australia in Sydney on July 4, Japan in New South Wales on July 11, and New Zealand in Auckland on July 18.
With Crowley having played every minute of the 2024 Six Nations title-winning campaign, his absence leaves a void in the starting 10 jersey. The coaching staff will now likely look to test depth options, with Sam Prendergast among those who have previously rotated into the position during the Six Nations, as the team looks to maintain its momentum during the southern hemisphere tour.
