According to Television Academy rules, performers who have previously received a nomination in lead or supporting categories for the same role are ineligible to compete as guest performers. Hamm, who was nominated for a supporting drama actor Emmy for the same role in 2024, fell directly under this prohibition. While the Television Academy typically verifies submissions, the conflict was not flagged during the initial processing, allowing Hamm to appear on the ballot before the error was caught.

Despite his removal from the guest actor category, Hamm remains a contender in other areas of the 2026 awards. He is currently eligible for lead drama actor for his performance in the Apple TV series Your Friends and Neighbors. Furthermore, his voice-over work as Marvin Flute in the animated series Grimsburg remains in contention.
