In Qianshan Village, Gongqingcheng, Jiujiang, rural revitalization is taking a hands-on approach through the work of Zhang Pingjun, a “first secretary” appointed to lead local development. According to reports from China Radio International (CRI), Zhang’s role has evolved into what locals describe as a “village general manager,” focusing on daily practical support for residents rather than purely administrative tasks.
Zhang, who arrived in the village nearly two years ago, manages a diverse portfolio of responsibilities. His work ranges from assisting individual farmers with fruit harvesting and navigating complex government procurement systems to facilitating business expansion. One notable success cited is the support provided to Yin Shigui, a local farmer whose poultry business was struggling. Zhang helped secure loans and connected the farm with regional supermarkets and online platforms, allowing the operation to scale toward a capacity of 100,000 chickens.
Beyond economic development, the role involves significant social mediation. Zhang frequently intervenes in land disputes, family disagreements, and neighborhood conflicts. He also coordinates emergency responses, including search efforts for missing residents. According to Zhang, building trust is the primary foundation for the village’s revitalization, as he works to bridge the gap between individual villagers and the bureaucratic processes required for sustainable growth.
