WASHINGTON (Azat TV) – The Department of Justice confirmed Friday that FBI Director Kash Patel’s personal email account has been hacked by an Iran-linked group known as the Handala Hack Team.
Iran-Linked Hackers Claim Responsibility
The Handala Hack Team has publicly claimed responsibility for breaching Patel’s personal inbox, going so far as to publish photos of the director and what they claim is his resume online. The group stated on their website that Patel would now join a list of their successful hacking victims. According to threat intelligence firm Cyble, the Handala Hack Team emerged in late 2023 and has become a notable cyber threat actor, frequently targeting Israeli interests and associated organizations.
Compromised Data Under Review
While Reuters was unable to immediately authenticate the specific emails and documents released by the hackers, a sample reviewed by the news agency appeared to contain a mix of personal and work-related correspondence dating from 2010 to 2019. The Department of Justice acknowledged the breach to Reuters but provided no further details on the scope or nature of the compromised information.
Background on Handala Hack Team
The Handala Hack Team’s alleged activities primarily focus on entities perceived to be linked to Israel. Their emergence in late 2023 has marked them as a visible player in the cyber threat landscape, known for disruptive tactics. The group’s public claims and data releases suggest a strategy aimed at causing embarrassment and highlighting perceived vulnerabilities of their targets.
The confirmation of this breach by the Department of Justice underscores the persistent threat posed by state-sponsored or state-linked hacking groups, highlighting the ongoing challenges in securing sensitive personal and professional communications in the digital age.
