Hardware Upgrades and Design

Apple has officially introduced the HomePod mini 2, the first refresh of its compact smart speaker since the original model launched in 2020. Unveiled at the company’s “Welcome Home” event on October 13, 2026, the device features a significant internal upgrade, moving to the S10 processor. According to Engadget, this new chip is designed to enhance computational audio and enable more advanced processing capabilities, though Apple has not reported changes to the physical speaker drivers themselves.

Externally, the device maintains the familiar mesh-covered orb design, now available in five color options: pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. A notable visual addition is the “Sound Glow” interface. As reported by Gizmodo, the top touch surface now pulses in synchronization with music, changing colors based on the bass and treble levels of the track, and even matching the specific color palette of the album artwork.

Pricing and Availability

The HomePod mini 2 is priced at $149, marking a $50 increase over the original 2020 launch price. Pre-orders are currently open through the Apple Store, with the first units expected to ship on October 30, 2026. This price point positions the device as a premium compact speaker, despite the hardware footprint remaining similar to its predecessor.

The Siri AI Compromise

While Apple is heavily marketing the integration of Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence, the company confirmed that these features will not be functional at the time of the October 30 launch. Apple stated that the enhanced conversational capabilities—such as pulling context from emails, calendar events, and text messages—will be delivered via future software updates. Mashable notes that to eventually leverage these AI features, users will need to pair the speaker with an iPhone or iPad that is already compatible with Apple Intelligence.

Expanded Connectivity

Beyond its standalone function, the HomePod mini 2 introduces enhanced multi-speaker support. Users can now pair up to four units to create a surround-sound home theater system when connected to the new Apple TV 4K. The system is designed to intelligently calibrate audio based on the placement of each speaker within a room. Additionally, Mac users can now utilize a pair of the new speakers as default desktop audio, offering lower latency and microphone support for video calls.
