Investigative journalist Pablo Torre has reported fresh allegations concerning Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard, claiming the player maintained a secret, multimillion-dollar sponsorship deal with Daktronics, the company responsible for the “Halo Board” at the team’s new Intuit Dome. This development significantly complicates an already active NBA investigation into the franchise’s financial dealings.
This report follows Torre’s initial 2025 investigation, which accused the Clippers of circumventing the NBA salary cap by funneling payments to Leonard through another team sponsor, Aspiration. While both the Clippers organization and Leonard’s representatives have consistently denied these claims, the introduction of a second alleged sponsorship controversy suggests a broader pattern of financial scrutiny that the league office must now address.
The Daktronics Connection
The allegations center on the construction and operation of the Intuit Dome, which opened in August 2024. Daktronics, a leading digital display manufacturer, provided the arena’s signature double-sided 4K “Halo Board.” According to Torre, who cited high-level anonymous sources, Leonard’s role as a spokesperson for the company was an “open secret” within the organization, allegedly serving as a vehicle to bypass standard NBA salary restrictions.
“This was talked about just openly within the organization, that Kawhi was a spokesperson for Daktronics,” a source told Torre. “It was 1000% a way to circumvent the salary cap.” The journalist further noted that a second source characterized the arrangement as a multimillion-dollar commitment, providing additional evidence that could prompt the league to intensify its audit of the Clippers’ contractual obligations.
Stakes for the Clippers and Raptors
The timing of these revelations is particularly sensitive for the Toronto Raptors, who have been attempting to finalize a trade for Leonard. The ongoing investigation into the Aspiration deal had already placed that move on hold; these new allegations regarding Daktronics create additional uncertainty regarding the viability of any trade involving Leonard. The NBA, led by Commissioner Adam Silver, has expressed a desire to resolve the situation, but the emergence of new, unverified financial channels may extend the timeline of the league’s probe well into 2027.
