The Kansas City Current announced on Monday morning that the club has mutually parted ways with sporting director Vlatko Andonovski. The decision marks the end of a multi-phased relationship between the franchise and the veteran coach, who transitioned from his highly successful on-field role to the front office less than a year prior. According to a report by KCTV5, the club’s leadership is now actively seeking a new direction for its technical and executive operations.
In an official statement, the franchise explained that both parties determined Andonovski’s requested transition from head coach to sporting director in November 2025 was ultimately “not the right fit.” Andonovski originally joined the KC Current’s technical staff as head coach for the 2024 season, during which he led the team to unprecedented heights on the pitch. However, his desire to move into an executive role last winter did not yield the long-term organizational alignment both sides had hoped to achieve.
During his time as head coach, Andonovski guided the Current to their first-ever National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Shield, awarded to the team with the most regular-season points. Under his tactical leadership, the team set multiple league records, including the most single-season points, most home victories, and the fewest goals conceded. This dominant run cemented his reputation as one of the premier coaches in women’s soccer, following his high-profile stint as the head coach of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) from 2019 to 2023.
The departure comes at a crucial juncture for the club. KC Current currently sits in seventh place in the NWSL standings with an active record of 11 wins, 8 losses, and 4 draws. While the team remains in the competitive mix, the vacancy in the sporting director position leaves a significant gap in the front office.
