Content creator and aspiring actor Hari Kishen Balakrishnan, widely known by his online persona Kiki Darling, has officially withdrawn from the cast of director Jack Neo’s upcoming film Ah Boys to Firefighters. The resignation follows a public exposé on September 7, 2026, by fellow content creator S Subhraaj, who revealed that Balakrishnan had a prior criminal conviction for sexual assault.
Balakrishnan, 26, had been unveiled on August 31 as one of the four lead actors for the film, following an open casting call that attracted over a thousand applicants. He was slated to play the character Ramesh Menon. However, after the information about his 2021 conviction resurfaced, the production team at J Team Productions confirmed they were unaware of his legal history during the initial casting process.

A spokesperson for the production told Mothership that the team was “very surprised” to learn of the conviction, noting that none of the cast members had declared prior criminal records. Following discussions with the production team, Balakrishnan decided to step down to avoid potential reputational risks to the project, which is scheduled for a Chinese New Year 2027 release.
The production is now actively recasting the role of Ramesh Menon and has initiated reshoots and editing to remove Balakrishnan’s existing scenes. Despite these delays, the production team expressed confidence that the theatrical release plans would not be significantly impacted. The team also announced that future casting processes will involve more stringent background verification.
Legal Background and Accountability
In 2021, Balakrishnan, then 20 years old, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault by penetration and creating obscene video recordings. According to court records reported by MustShareNews, the offense involved a 23-year-old male friend who was incapacitated due to alcohol consumption. He was sentenced to six months of reformative training at the Reformative Training Centre (RTC). In a video statement released on September 10, Balakrishnan apologized to the victim and his community, acknowledging that he failed to disclose his past to his supporters and collaborators.
