San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Saturday that he is near full recovery from a major mid-summer automobile accident and plans to take his place on the sideline for the team’s exhibition opener against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night. Addressing reporters during his first news conference of training camp, Shanahan cleared up lingering questions regarding his physical status and daily presence at the team facility.
The announcement follows a July 14 traffic collision in Palo Alto, California, where Shanahan sustained a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand, and required over 40 stitches to treat a facial laceration above his eye. Despite the injuries, the 10th-year head coach confirmed he has maintained core responsibilities throughout the summer, evaluating practice tape daily even as medical staff managed his recovery routine.
Recovery Milestones and Daily Operations
Shanahan detailed his ongoing recovery, noting that while the physical fractures have stabilized, minor lingering post-concussion symptoms continue to require careful schedule management. He highlighted that sensitivity to loud noise at the practice field has subsided, though periodic fatigue and minor headaches persist.
“I’m doing real good,” Shanahan said. “My body feels good. Just got to get this annoying cast off. My ribs feel good, except when I sneeze, and my head feels so much better. Concussions do linger a little bit. The only things I really deal with now is just headaches and fatigue.”
While Shanahan temporarily scaled back his daily address to the entire squad, he emphasized that film study and strategic evaluation remained uninterrupted. Day-to-day camp oversight was supported by acting head coach Chris Foerster alongside coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer. Shanahan credited the established system and coaching staff continuity for enabling him to prioritize physical rest without disrupting team preparation.
Vehicle Automation and Safety Reflection
Addressing the details of the crash, Shanahan accepted responsibility for the incident, which occurred when he reached behind his seat for his mobile device while traveling at approximately 20 mph. The collision involved a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old woman. Shanahan was the sole individual hospitalized following the incident, and local law enforcement did not issue citations.
Shanahan confirmed his vehicle was in Tesla’s Autopilot mode prior to the impact, though he acknowledged uncertainty over whether the system disengaged or experienced a technical fault during the sequence. He stressed that automated driver-assistance features do not absolve operators of primary vigilance.
“Regardless, that is always your fault, whether you’re in autopilot or not,” Shanahan noted. “You can’t take your eyes off the road. It’s a partnership driving. You don’t just turn it over to a computer. It’s a good lesson, no matter how comfortable I am with that, that I believe someday could save my life or someone else’s.”
Preseason Itinerary and Regular Season Horizon
The 49ers enter an intensive phase of their preseason schedule, including joint practice sessions with the Tennessee Titans ahead of Thursday’s contest, followed by joint practices with the Los Angeles Chargers next week. San Francisco will complete its exhibition slate against the Las Vegas Raiders on August 27.
Following the conclusion of domestic preseason activities, the franchise is scheduled to travel internationally to Australia. The 49ers will officially launch their 2026 NFL regular season on September 11 in Sydney against the Los Angeles Rams.
