New head coach Dusty May, who joined the Mavericks following his tenure at the University of Michigan, observed Irving during a rigorous training session at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. May’s assessment of the veteran guard was effusive, comparing Irving’s movement and skill set to the artistry of Pablo Picasso. “I felt like I left the gym watching Picasso paint a picture,” May told ESPN’s NBA Today, noting that Irving’s focus is currently centered on passing his professional experience to a squad heavily reliant on youth.
Front Office Strategy and Roster Flexibility
While Irving remains cemented as a core piece, the Mavericks’ front office is actively exploring roster adjustments. NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the team has informed interested organizations that Irving is unavailable for trade. Conversely, veterans including P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, and Klay Thompson are reportedly among those the team is willing to discuss in trade scenarios.
The shift comes as the Mavericks seek to balance their books and optimize their lineup. P.J. Washington, in particular, is currently tied to a four-year, $90 million extension. While Washington was a key contributor during the team’s 2024 NBA Finals run, his production saw a decline in the 2025-26 season, with his three-point shooting efficiency dropping to 32.5%.
The Mavericks’ front office, led by a management team described as being “open for business” by insider Chris B. Haynes, is aiming for strategic improvements rather than impulsive moves.
