A Decisive Victory in Ningbo

Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez secured her place in the final of the WTA 500 BNB Ningbo Open on Saturday, defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 7-5. The victory marks a significant milestone for the 24-year-old, who reaches the 10th final of her professional career and her second in as many months, according to reporting by Tennis Majors.

Fernandez’s performance against the Czech Republic’s Bouzkova was a display of composure, effectively reversing the outcome of their only previous professional encounter. In 2019, as a teenager, Fernandez suffered a lopsided loss to Bouzkova in Toronto. This time, however, Fernandez took control early, winning the opening set 6-3 before weathering a push from her opponent in the second to close out the match in straight sets.

“The win against the player who crushed her in their only previous meeting as a teenager puts the 24-year-old one victory away from her second title in less than a month,” TennisWatcher reported. The triumph is the latest in a productive autumn for the Canadian, who won the Singapore Open title just last month.

The Road to the Final

While the semifinal was completed in straight sets, Fernandez’s journey to the final was marked by grueling physical demands. Before Saturday’s match, she had spent nearly eight hours on the court across three previous rounds. Her campaign included a comeback victory against seventh seed Elise Mertens, a three-hour battle against qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and a quarterfinal win against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Bouzkova, meanwhile, entered the match in strong form, having reached the semifinals without dropping a set. Despite her rhythm throughout the week, she could not sustain the pressure against Fernandez. The defeat ends a successful tournament for the 28-year-old, who has already secured titles in Nottingham and Bogota this season.

A High-Stakes Championship Match

Fernandez will face world No. 1 Elena Rybakina in Sunday’s final. Rybakina, the defending Ningbo champion, defeated Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 to earn her spot. For Fernandez, the final represents a chance to continue her climb in the live rankings, as she moves toward the top 25. Having won 13 of her last 16 matches, the Canadian carries significant momentum into the clash against the top-seeded Kazakhstani player.
