The triple-murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, who is charged with the January 2023 strangulation of her three children, moved into its second day of testimony on Wednesday. Patrick Clancy, the defendant’s ex-husband and father of the victims—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan—concluded his time on the stand, providing a harrowing account of the day of the incident while facing rigorous cross-examination regarding his former wife’s mental health history.
During his testimony, Patrick Clancy described the events of January 24, 2023, confirming he had left the family home to run errands, including a trip to a pharmacy and a restaurant to pick up takeout. He noted that he had spoken briefly with Lindsay Clancy by phone while he was at the pharmacy, shortly before the killings occurred. Upon returning home, he discovered a quiet house and a locked bedroom door. After failing to get a response, he found Lindsay Clancy in the backyard having jumped from a second-story window, suffering from severe self-inflicted wounds. When asked about the children, he testified that she directed him to the basement, where he subsequently discovered them with exercise bands around their necks.
Defense focuses on mental health history
The defense, led by attorney Kevin Reddington, utilized the cross-examination to establish a narrative of severe postpartum mental illness. Patrick Clancy testified that his ex-wife had struggled with insomnia and anxiety in the months leading up to the tragedy, often rocking back and forth with her head under a pillow. He confirmed that she was under the care of several medical professionals, including nurse practitioners, and was prescribed a regimen of medications, including Zoloft, Seroquel, and Ativan.
Addressing claims regarding medication consistency, Patrick Clancy stated that his wife was diligent about her treatment, maintaining a detailed journal of her dosages, reactions, and times of administration. The defense also highlighted the couple’s domestic life, presenting photos of a home filled with art projects and dedicated play areas, characterizing Lindsay Clancy as a “very dedicated” mother who struggled immensely with the prospect of returning to work after childbirth.
Prosecution presents timeline and observations
Earlier in the day, the prosecution called two additional witnesses to establish the timeline of the evening: a pharmacy manager and a restaurant hostess. Both witnesses testified that their interactions with the Clancys on the day of the incident appeared normal, with no indications of impairment or distress. The court also heard from the prosecution regarding the layout of the home, specifically noting the 12-foot drop from the bedroom window from which Lindsay Clancy jumped.
