  • Varland transitioned from D-II college baseball to MLB All-Star status.

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Louie Varland has officially been selected for the American League All-Star team. The 28-year-old North St. Paul native has emerged as one of the most dominant closers in Major League Baseball, maintaining a perfect 19-for-19 save conversion rate through the 2026 season.

According to CBS Sports, Varland currently holds a 1.10 ERA with 67 strikeouts across 49 innings. His recent performance includes a save in a 5-3 victory over the San Diego Padres, where he allowed only a single run despite a challenging outing. This consistency has provided the Blue Jays with significant stability in their bullpen.

Varland’s journey to the All-Star stage is notable for his unconventional path. Originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 15th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, he spent his collegiate career at D-II Concordia St. Paul. Traded to Toronto during last summer’s deadline, Varland previously made headlines for setting a major league record with 15 postseason appearances during the 2025 campaign.

Reflecting on his selection in an interview with KSTP, Varland expressed excitement regarding his career trajectory. He remains one of only three 2026 All-Stars to transition from D-II college baseball to the professional game’s highest level, joining a group that includes Twins starter Joe Ryan.
