Meta officially broke ground on July 8, 2026, in Sturgeon County, Alberta, marking the start of construction on its first-ever data center in Canada. The project, valued at $13 billion CAD, represents a significant shift in Meta’s global infrastructure strategy as it races to scale capacity for artificial intelligence services.
Located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, the facility is designed to support the company’s expanding AI model requirements. According to official announcements, the project will include a $4.6 billion investment specifically dedicated to an on-site power plant to ensure the facility’s energy needs are met.
Economic Stakes and Local Impact
Sturgeon County Mayor Alana Hnatiw highlighted the project as a transformative milestone for the region. The development is expected to generate up to 3,000 construction jobs and over 300 long-term operational roles in technical and maintenance sectors. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith noted that the investment positions the province as a central player in the global AI revolution.
Meta’s move into the Canadian market comes as the company seeks to compete more aggressively with hyperscalers like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. While investors have closely scrutinized Meta’s capital expenditure forecasts—which have reached as high as $145 billion this year—the company maintains that this infrastructure is vital for its long-term cloud and AI business models.
Environmental and Sustainability Commitments
Addressing growing concerns regarding the environmental footprint of large-scale data centers, Meta has pledged to match 100% of its electricity consumption with renewable or clean energy. The facility will utilize a closed-loop, liquid-cooled system to minimize water usage for cooling purposes, a design choice intended to satisfy both local regulatory requirements and provincial environmental standards under the Alberta Water Act.
The company stated it has coordinated its energy strategy with Canadian firms including Altalink, Capitol Power, and the Alberta Electric System Operator to ensure the grid can accommodate the massive 1-gigawatt facility. Construction is estimated to take between two and three years to complete.
