Police Upgrade Investigation Following Forensic Findings
Mpumalanga police have officially upgraded their inquiry into the deaths of two young people at a holiday home in Sabie to a murder investigation. The decision follows the receipt of preliminary post-mortem results which suggest that 17-year-old Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, a Grade 11 pupil at St Stithians Girls’ College, died as a result of strangulation and suffocation.
The investigation also concerns the death of 19-year-old Ethan Coetzee, a former student at St Stithians Boys’ College, whose body was discovered alongside Waldeck-Cooks on Monday. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that while the investigation into Coetzee’s death suggests a possible suicide, the broader circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active scrutiny.
Context of the Incident
Waldeck-Cooks had traveled to the Sabie region to participate in a hiking expedition. According to a statement released by her parents, Derrick Cooks and Claire Waldeck-Cooks, the trip was intended to fulfill requirements for the gold level of the President’s Award for Youth Empowerment, the South African implementation of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. The teenager had been invited to join two other families for the multi-day adventurous journey.
Initial reports had speculated that the deaths might have been linked to a drug overdose. However, the latest forensic findings have shifted the focus of the police investigation. The family of Waldeck-Cooks, who appointed an independent forensic pathologist to conduct a parallel review, stated that their expert’s findings align with the police’s preliminary conclusion regarding strangulation.

St Stithians College has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Waldeck-Cooks as a “loved and valued member” of the school community. Having attended the institution since Grade R, she was recognized as an accomplished sportswoman, particularly in rowing and netball. The school and the affected families have requested privacy, urging the public to avoid spreading unverified accounts while the police process continues.
“We are aware that conflicting and unverified accounts concerning the circumstances of Cameron’s death have been reported,” the parents said in a statement. “We ask that speculation not be presented as fact while the investigation and forensic processes remain ongoing.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed the full sequence of events at the guesthouse, and the investigation is expected to involve a comprehensive review of witness accounts and forensic evidence. As the police work to establish whether the two deaths are inextricably linked, the focus remains on determining the precise timeline of events at the Sabie property. A memorial service for Waldeck-Cooks is planned for later this month.
