A Major Strategic Shift
Netflix has officially disclosed a $587 million acquisition of InterPositive, an artificial intelligence film technology company founded by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck in 2022. The transaction, detailed in a recent securities filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, marks one of the streaming giant’s most significant investments in AI-driven production infrastructure to date.
InterPositive was established with the stated goal of developing “AI-powered tools built by and for filmmakers.” According to Netflix, the acquisition includes the entire InterPositive team, with Affleck transitioning into a role as a senior advisor. The technology is designed to assist with complex post-production tasks, including visual consistency, background replacements, and lighting adjustments, which the company claims can significantly accelerate production timelines.
Efficiency and Industry Skepticism
During a recent earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos highlighted the practical utility of the technology, noting that approximately 300 active productions currently utilize AI tools. He pointed to the docuseries “The American Experiment,” executive produced by Tom Hanks, as a case study in efficiency; 17 minutes of the series utilized AI-enhanced footage, resulting in production speeds twice as fast at half the cost of traditional methods. Despite these gains, Netflix faces pressure from investors following a second-quarter earnings report that saw the company’s stock price dip by 2% to $67.60.
The acquisition arrives amid broader industry friction regarding the role of AI in creative work. Affleck, a prominent member of SAG-AFTRA, finds himself in a complex position. The actors’ union recently secured rigorous AI guardrails in their latest contract to protect human performances. While Affleck has framed InterPositive’s mission as a way to “keep storytelling human” and “protect creative choice,” critics remain wary of the rapid integration of AI by major studios.
Collaborative Ventures
Parallel to his tech ventures, Affleck continues to focus on traditional filmmaking through his long-standing partnership with Matt Damon. The duo, who share nearly five decades of history, recently discussed their ongoing creative collaboration in an interview with PEOPLE magazine. Damon, currently promoting “The Odyssey,” noted that their production company is entering a new phase as they navigate their 50s. The pair is currently working on an upcoming directorial project for Affleck, which will feature Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, and Kerry Washington, signaling that despite his pivot into AI tech, Affleck remains deeply committed to human-led cinematic storytelling.
