NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Azat TV) – The Newport News Police Department (NNPD) announced Wednesday that 30-year-old Gregory Glenn Martin has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son. Martin also faces charges of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious injury, as well as providing false information to law enforcement regarding his sex offender registry status.

Martin’s arrest follows the earlier apprehension of the child’s mother, 27-year-old Katrina Marie Sudberry, who was charged last Friday with second-degree murder and felony child abuse. According to court documents cited by local officials, the investigation began on July 16 after emergency crews were dispatched to a residence on Walden Pond Court following reports of a medical crisis.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered the child unresponsive on a bedroom floor with visible bruising across his body and face. The boy was airlifted to the Children’s Hospital of the Kings’ Daughters, where he was pronounced dead. A subsequent autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner concluded that the child died from blunt force trauma, noting severe lacerations to internal organs and various abrasions.

Investigators stated that Sudberry admitted to subjecting the child to physical discipline, including the use of a belt and forced exercises such as push-ups and wall squats. She claimed that she found the child unresponsive after he had exhibited low energy and vomiting earlier that day, though she reportedly contacted her mother before alerting emergency services. The investigation remains active as authorities process evidence regarding the extent of the abuse and the roles played by both defendants.
