PHILADELPHIA (Azat TV) – Sophomore Nischal Spurling of the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team punched his ticket to the NCAA Singles Championships by reaching the singles final at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championships, Penn Athletics reported. The tournament took place from Oct. 16 to Oct. 20 at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers in Philadelphia, where the Quakers defended their home courts against top regional competition.
Spurling put together an impressive run through the main draw, opening with a straight-set victory over Charlie Valentine of Columbia by scores of 6-2, 6-3. He followed that performance with a three-set comeback against Princeton’s Aleksandar Mitric, recovering from a first-set shutout to win 0-6, 6-3, 7-5. Spurling continued his momentum with straight-set wins over Abhishek Thorat of Columbia (6-3, 6-2) and Yerassyl Bakhtiyar of NJIT (7-6, 6-0) to reach the semifinals. In the semifinal round, Spurling defeated Columbia’s Andrew Ena 6-4, 6-1 to secure his spot in the championship match and his automatic NCAA berth.
Doubles Success and Finals Run
While Spurling starred in the singles bracket, teammates Aaron Sandler and Justin Chung also made a deep run for the Quakers. Entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed, Sandler and Chung navigated through early rounds, defeating pairs from Fordham and Penn State 8-6 before securing an 8-4 victory over Princeton’s Meecah Bigun and JunHao Luo in the round of 16. The duo continued their surge by limiting St. Joseph’s opponents to two games in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Sandler and Chung faced Columbia’s Andrew Kotzen and Jordan Chang, winning a tight first-set tiebreak 7-6(7-4) and taking the second set 6-3. However, the pair fell in the championship match to Columbia’s No. 5 seed Andrew Ena and Damir Zhalgasbay, losing 6-4, 7-6(7-2). Despite the final defeat, Sandler and Chung earned a bid to the upcoming ITA Sectionals, keeping their hopes alive for a doubles berth at the NCAA championships.
Quakers Standouts in Singles Play
Penn’s overall singles campaign featured multiple strong performances alongside Spurling. Sophomore Adam Bain and junior Justin Chung both advanced to the tournament quarterfinals alongside Spurling. Bain opened with a straight-set win over Christos Glavas of Penn State (6-3, 6-3) before upsetting Columbia’s No. 4 seed Thanaphat Boosarawongse. Although Bain fell short in a tough three-set quarterfinal against Ena, his overall performance earned him an ITA Sectionals bid alongside Chung.
With regional play concluded, the qualified Quakers turn their focus toward the ITA Sectionals in late November, where additional players have the opportunity to punch their tickets to the national championships alongside Spurling.
