Leeds United forward Noah Okafor has officially announced that he will no longer represent the Swiss national team as long as Murat Yakin remains in charge. The 26-year-old, who has earned 26 caps for his country, confirmed his decision in a public statement, describing an irreparable breakdown of trust between himself and the national team coaching staff.
The announcement follows a series of tensions that culminated during the 2026 World Cup in North America. Despite participating in the team’s round of 32 match against Algeria, where he featured for 13 minutes, Okafor clarified that his departure is not motivated by a lack of playing time. Instead, he pointed toward specific incidents during the tournament that left him feeling mistreated and disillusioned.
From Reconciliation to Retirement
The relationship between the player and the coach has been turbulent. Following the 2024 European Championship, Okafor faced public scrutiny regarding his body language and comments made about his limited involvement in matches. At that time, Yakin and members of his staff traveled to England to meet with the forward, a gesture that Okafor described as “very respectful and positive” at the time. The pair appeared to have reconciled, and Okafor expressed optimism heading into the World Cup.
However, the tournament experience proved to be the breaking point. Okafor stated that the promises made during their reconciliation were not kept, and the treatment he received during the World Cup was deeply affecting. He specifically noted that even minor on-field errors were met with reactions that he found personally damaging, leading to his conclusion that a foundation of mutual respect no longer exists.
The FA’s Response
The Swiss Football Association (SFV) acknowledged the situation in a brief statement on Thursday. The governing body confirmed that it had received personal notification from the player regarding his decision to step away. The SFV stated that it respects his choice and wished him success in his ongoing career with Leeds United.
Despite his decision, Okafor maintained a professional stance toward Yakin’s achievements, acknowledging that the coach has performed effectively in his role and achieved historic success with the national team. For now, the forward intends to focus on his club career, though he noted that the decision to step away was “extremely difficult” given his personal attachment to the national colors.
