Marine biologists have documented a previously unobserved hunting and prey-processing behavior among orcas in the Gulf of California, Mexico. The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Ethology, describe a coordinated “ram-to-fragment” strategy where one orca stabilizes a sunfish carcass while another strikes it at high velocity, causing the prey to shatter into small, manageable pieces.

Dr. Kathryn Ayres of the non-profit organization Beneath The Waves captured the first instance on video in July 2024. In the footage, an adult female orca holds a dead sunfish steady, allowing an adult male to accelerate toward the target. The impact is powerful enough to fragment the gelatinous body of the sunfish, which can weigh up to 2,000 kilograms. A second incident, recorded by a tourism operator in September 2025, confirmed that the behavior is not an isolated event.

Cognitive Sophistication and Social Dynamics

The behavior highlights the remarkable cognitive flexibility of orcas. According to Erick Higuera, a marine biologist with Conexiones Terramar and co-author of the research, the tactic requires multi-step planning and precise cooperation between individuals. While the strategy clearly serves a functional purpose—creating bite-sized morsels for juvenile orcas whose smaller jaws struggle to process large, rubbery prey—researchers suggest it may also function as a form of social play.

“Play is a core pillar of orca society,” Higuera noted. Experts like Dr. Martina Francesconi of the University of Pisa suggest that such behaviors often emerge in playful contexts, which then evolve into functional hunting tactics, or vice versa. The presence of juvenile whales consuming the resulting fragments reinforces the theory that this “ramming” serves both as a feeding mechanism and a learning opportunity for younger members of the pod.

The Role of Wildlife Tourism

The discovery was made possible by the increasing use of underwater cameras and drones by eco-tourism operators. While this collaboration provides scientists with unprecedented access to cetacean behavior, it also raises questions about potential disturbances. Following new regulations introduced by Mexican authorities last year, researchers emphasize the importance of maintaining respectful distances to ensure these observations remain non-invasive.
