A new cultural initiative in Toronto, Pagsasama, is working to bridge the identity gap for young Filipino Canadians by providing a dedicated space for creative expression. Founded by Dante Paolo, the program focuses on reconnecting youth with their Filipino heritage through music, visual arts, and collaborative performance.

According to the Philippine Canadian Inquirer, the initiative originated as a modest music jam session at York University. Since then, it has evolved into a structured platform designed to dismantle specific barriers faced by emerging artists within the community, including limited access to professional opportunities and financial constraints. Paolo, who launched the project following a personal journey of rediscovery in the Philippines, describes the initiative as a response to his own experiences of feeling detached from his cultural identity while growing up in Canada.

Paolo emphasizes that Pagsasama—a Tagalog term implying togetherness or companionship—is intended to be inclusive of the diverse experiences within the diaspora. By fostering a “unique mosaic” of identities, the program seeks to encourage participants to celebrate their heritage regardless of their specific linguistic abilities or generational distance from the Philippines. Through this institutional support, Pagsasama aims to ensure that Filipino-Canadian creatives have the resources and community backing necessary to sustain their artistic practice.
