PEMBERTON TOWNSHIP – A municipal council meeting in New Jersey erupted into physical confrontation this week when Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini lunged toward a vocal local critic and had to be restrained by onlookers, according to Fox News. The incident, captured on video during a Wednesday night session, has triggered calls for resignation and a municipal court complaint as the township approaches a contested mayoral election.

Video footage recorded by Pine Barrens Tribune reporter Ryan Elmore shows Bianchini rushing off his seat toward resident Michael Sawka while shouting profanities and threatening to “get” him, ABC7 New York reported. Several attendees and former law enforcement officers physically intervened to hold the Republican mayor back and remove him from the chamber as tensions boiled over during an employment appeal hearing.

Escalation and Admissions Following the Clash

Following the adjournment of the turbulent session, Bianchini acknowledged losing his temper in an interview with New York Post reporting partners. “I just basically snapped,” Bianchini said, describing the confrontation as long-simmering. “I hate to put it this way, but it’s a long time coming. I should not have said that. That was wrong. It was in the heat of the moment.”

However, the mayor defended his underlying motivation, asserting that Sawka and other individuals directed offensive remarks toward his wife and daughter, who were seated in the back of the room. “Was it wrong? Absolutely. Was it justified? Absolutely. And I would do it again if I had to,” Bianchini stated, adding that good husbands and fathers must protect their families.

Contrasting Accounts of the Confrontation

Sawka strongly denied directing any commentary toward the mayor’s family or initiating the physical altercation. According to Sawka, he remained seated throughout the exchange while a recently fired township employee, former Community Development Director Ken Gerber, was addressing the council regarding administration practices.

“I’m just sitting there. I never got up. I sat there the whole time. I was calm the whole time,” Sawka said, claiming he merely waved his hand in frustration after members of the mayor’s family allegedly made remarks from the back of the room. Sawka has filed a municipal court complaint seeking assault and terroristic threats charges against the mayor and is demanding an immediate resignation.

Political Fallout and Legal Next Steps

Local political organizations have swiftly weighed in on the disruption. The Pemberton Township Democratic Club issued a statement emphasizing that local governance requires leaders who remain composed and professional under pressure, urging residents to make their voices heard in the upcoming election where Bianchini is seeking to retain his seat.

As of Thursday, local police departments have not confirmed whether formal criminal charges will be pursued following Sawka’s court filing. Bianchini, who was appointed earlier this year to fill a vacancy following his predecessor’s resignation, maintains that his primary focus remains improving the township despite the intense political friction.
