The Redding City Council has unanimously approved a new wildfire mitigation plan for Redding Electric Utility (REU), authorizing preemptive power shutoffs in designated high-risk areas. The measure, intended to prevent electrical infrastructure from sparking wildfires, affects approximately 1,950 residential and commercial customers.
According to REU Director Nicholas Zettel, these “public safety power shutoffs” (PSPS) are considered a last resort. Implementation will depend on specific weather conditions sustained over a six-hour period and the availability of local fire crews. The designated high-risk zones include the Tierra Oaks, Lake Boulevard, Sunset Terrace, and Branstetter communities.
Data provided by REU indicates that 1,866 residential and 88 commercial customers fall within these zones, including 134 low-income households and 19 medically vulnerable individuals. To assist those affected, the utility is offering a $500 rebate for residents and businesses to purchase power backup generators or batteries. Furthermore, customers will receive a $100 “inconvenience credit” if they are subject to a confirmed PSPS event.
Residents can verify their status and view the risk map by visiting www.cityofredding.gov/psps. The utility strongly urges customers to ensure their contact information is updated on the site to receive advance notifications regarding potential outages.
