KYIV (Azat TV) – Kyiv and its surrounding region were subjected to a significant missile and drone attack by Russia on Friday, causing casualties and disrupting power supplies across several areas. The assault marks the latest in a series of intensified daytime attacks on Ukraine.
Intensified Attacks on Kyiv Region
Governor of Kyiv Oblast, Mykola Chaban, reported that the region experienced a “massive attack by enemy missiles and drones.” The strikes resulted in at least one fatality, according to officials. The Ukrainian military stated that while most aerial targets were intercepted, even isolated hits had severe consequences for the energy system and public safety.
Energy Infrastructure Targeted
The national energy operator, Ukrenergo, confirmed that emergency power outages occurred in multiple regions due to the shelling. The company warned that restoration efforts could be prolonged, as the strikes impacted crucial nodes of the energy system. This targeting of energy infrastructure has become a recurring tactic, aimed at undermining Ukraine’s resilience.
Diplomatic Standoff Over Ceasefire
The attacks occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated Kyiv’s readiness for a ceasefire during the upcoming Easter holidays. However, the Kremlin has stated that it has not received any such proposals. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba condemned the attacks, accusing Russia of deliberately prolonging the war and aiming to inflict maximum civilian casualties and destruction during daylight hours. “This is how Moscow responds to Ukraine’s Easter ceasefire proposals – with brutal attacks,” Kuleba stated.
International Condemnation
International partners of Ukraine have condemned the latest wave of attacks, emphasizing that strikes on civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law. Ukraine continues to accuse Russia of prolonging the conflict with the aim of seizing more Ukrainian territory and asserts that Moscow is not interested in peace.
The repeated targeting of Ukrainian energy infrastructure, particularly during periods of potential diplomatic overtures, highlights a strategic effort by Russia to degrade Ukraine’s capacity to sustain itself and its defense, while simultaneously creating a narrative of retaliation against perceived provocations.
