ULYANOVSK REGION, Russia (Azat TV) – A passenger train carrying over 400 individuals derailed in Russia’s Ulyanovsk region early Friday morning, resulting in at least 24 injuries, including four children. Seven cars of the train, en route from Chelyabinsk to Moscow, left the tracks near Briandino station, with several overturning. Authorities confirmed no fatalities occurred in the incident.
Passenger Injuries and Evacuation Efforts
The derailment, which occurred around 6:26 a.m. local time, led to passengers exiting the train through windows in the immediate aftermath. While initial reports suggested seven injured, the figure was later revised to 24. According to the governor of the Chelyabinsk region, Alexei Teksler, two individuals sustained fractures—one to the leg and another to the collarbone—while the remaining injured suffered contusions. Four children were among those hospitalized, with some directed to the Dimitrovgrad and Ulyanovsk regional hospitals.
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations coordinated the evacuation of passengers, utilizing two trains and buses to transport them from the accident site. A temporary shelter was established in the village of Briandino, and emergency services mobilized over 150 specialists and approximately 40 pieces of equipment. Passengers were slated to be transported to Ulyanovsk-Central Station, where a medical assistance point was set up to facilitate their onward journey on alternative trains, with medical relay support.
Investigation Launched into Railway Safety
Following the incident, both the Transport Prosecutor’s Office and the Russian Investigative Committee initiated investigations into potential violations of railway safety and operational regulations. The exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation. Russian media reported that passengers assisted each other in exiting the damaged carriages in the early moments after the crash.
The train was reportedly carrying 415 passengers, according to Russian Railways (RZD). Images broadcast by Russian television showed at least two carriages lying on their sides amidst thick fog.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding railway infrastructure and safety protocols in Russia, particularly given the significant number of passengers involved and the subsequent launch of official investigations.
