Marvel Studios has officially confirmed the next phase of its Wakandan saga, with director Ryan Coogler announcing the development of Black Panther 3 during the studio’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. The film, which is slated for a theatrical release on December 15, 2028, will feature actor David Jonsson stepping into the mantle of the Black Panther.
Coogler, who directed the franchise’s first two installments, confirmed that Jonsson will portray T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint—the son of T’Challa, originally played by the late Chadwick Boseman. “The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played,” Coogler told the audience. “In this next film, he grows up and he comes of age.”

The announcement confirms a significant shift in the franchise’s narrative trajectory. Following the passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever focused on Shuri’s (Letitia Wright) journey as she navigated grief and the responsibility of the throne.
