Texas State football earned its first victory of the 2026 season on Saturday, overcoming North Texas 49-35 in a high-scoring affair at Jim Wacker Field at UFCU Stadium. The Bobcats (1-2) utilized a powerful rushing attack, totaling 337 yards on the ground to secure the win, as reported by the Austin American-Statesman.
Running back Torrance Burgess Jr. led the offensive charge with 214 yards on 25 carries, consistently breaking through the North Texas defensive line. Fellow running back Davian Jackson added 77 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Brad Jackson rebounded from a difficult previous week, completing 16-of-22 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns, according to ESPN.
Offensive shootout defines first half
The game opened with a flurry of scoring, as Texas State surged to a 21-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, North Texas quarterback Tayven Jackson orchestrated a significant comeback, connecting on 12 consecutive passes to open the game. The Mean Green matched the Bobcats’ scoring in the second quarter, entering halftime tied at 28-28.
Tayven Jackson finished the contest with a career-high 483 passing yards, completing 43-of-57 attempts with three touchdowns and one interception. Despite his prolific performance, the North Texas offense struggled to maintain momentum in the second half, as the Texas State defense stiffened, forcing a fumble and a crucial turnover on downs late in the game.
Second half defensive adjustments
The pivotal moment arrived in the fourth quarter when the Bobcats’ defensive unit successfully halted North Texas’ comeback efforts. After North Texas narrowed the lead to 42-35 on a touchdown pass from Tayven Jackson to Jaheim White with 5:24 remaining, the Texas State defense prevented further scoring. Davian Jackson ultimately sealed the win with a final touchdown run around the right side with 3:07 left on the clock.
The offensive line for Texas State played a crucial role in the victory, holding North Texas without a sack and allowing only one quarterback hit throughout the afternoon. The two teams combined for 1,181 yards of total offense, highlighting the competitive nature of the shootout.
