The Bureau of the Royal Household in Thailand announced on Friday that Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has passed away at the age of 47. The princess, who had been in a coma since December 2022 following a heart condition, died peacefully on Thursday evening in a Bangkok hospital.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul paid tribute to the princess, describing her as a “pride of Thailand” and highlighting her dedication to social justice and the welfare of the Thai people. Her death marks the end of a long period of uncertainty following her collapse during an exercise session in late 2022, which doctors later attributed to a severe irregular heartbeat caused by a mycoplasma infection.
A Legacy of Legal Advocacy
Princess Bajrakitiyabha was widely considered the most accomplished member of the modern Thai royal family. Trained as a lawyer at Cornell University, she broke from the traditional, distant role of royalty by engaging directly with systemic issues. Her work with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) led to the adoption of the “Bangkok Rules,” which established international standards for the treatment of female prisoners.
Her “Inspire” (Kamlangjai) campaign specifically targeted the rehabilitation of incarcerated women, earning her significant public respect. Analysts note that her active public service profile allowed the monarchy to maintain a sense of relevance and utility to the general population, a stark contrast to more traditional royal roles.
Geopolitical and Succession Stakes
The princess’s passing creates a significant void in the Thai succession. King Vajiralongkorn, 73, has not yet formally named an heir. While Thai tradition favors male succession, a 1974 constitutional amendment allows for a female monarch. Princess Bajrakitiyabha was frequently cited by royal observers as the most capable candidate to lead, either as Queen or as a regent for her younger brother, Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti.
With her death, the burden of the succession now falls entirely on the 21-year-old Prince Dipangkorn, who has remained largely out of the public eye. Given the strict lese majeste laws in Thailand, public discussion regarding the future of the monarchy remains effectively prohibited, leaving the institutional stability of the kingdom in a state of quiet, profound uncertainty.
