According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the deal secures two future second-round picks for Oklahoma City: Atlanta’s 2030 second-round selection and the least favorable of the Hawks’ or Lakers’ 2032 second-round picks.
The trade arrives as the Thunder look to manage an increasingly saturated roster. Despite being a key contributor to the 2025 championship run, Wiggins saw his postseason utility decline in 2026, averaging just 5.8 minutes across 13 playoff games. The move addresses the team’s depth issues, as the organization struggled to find consistent minutes for its wing rotation throughout the previous season.
Impact for Both Franchises
For the Thunder, the transaction is primarily about clearing cap space and accumulating additional trade capital. Wiggins carried a $9 million cap hit for the upcoming season, with subsequent hits of $8.1 million in the following years. By moving the 27-year-old, the Thunder add to their already significant collection of future draft assets, which the front office intends to leverage to maintain their status as championship contenders.
Conversely, the Atlanta Hawks view the acquisition as a low-risk, high-reward investment. As reported by The Sporting News, the Hawks are looking to integrate Wiggins into a rotation that features rising star Jalen Johnson and veteran guard CJ McCollum. While Atlanta is not currently positioned as a title favorite, they are aiming to build on a promising postseason that saw them defeat the championship-caliber New York Knicks twice.
