A major departure for the Nine Network
Today Show weather presenter Tim Davies has announced he is stepping down from his role on the breakfast program after seven years. The 42-year-old presenter shared the news live on air during Friday’s broadcast, confirming that his final appearance will take place on September 18, 2026.
Davies, who has spent 12 years in total with the Nine Network, became a cornerstone of the Today Show’s identity since joining the breakfast team in 2019. Known for his extensive travel across Australia to broadcast from remote and regional communities, Davies noted that the demanding nature of the role—which involved constant travel and long hours on the road—influenced his decision to seek a change.
Reflecting on a decade of travel
During his emotional announcement, Davies reflected on the unique nature of his work, which prioritized human interest stories and regional engagement over traditional studio weather segments. “I’ve had the job of highlighting local heroes, sharing really good news stories, showcasing communities, clubs, schools, and various organisations across this big brown land of ours,” he said. “After all of these years, I’ve made the really hard decision to finish on a high, and step back from this role, and in turn, from this program.”
Nine’s Director of Morning Television, Steven Burling, paid tribute to Davies, describing him as a “much-loved” member of the hosting family. Burling stated that the network is fully supportive of Davies’ decision to “lay down some roots” after years of living out of a suitcase, though he acknowledged that the presenter leaves “enormous shoes to fill.”
Context of a changing breakfast landscape
The departure comes at a challenging time for the Nine Network. The Today Show is currently trailing its primary rival, Seven’s Sunrise, in national ratings. Recent data indicates a significant gap, with Today recording a national average of 288,000 viewers compared to Sunrise’s 456,000. This shift in the on-air team adds pressure to the network as it prepares for its upcoming Upfront event, where it traditionally outlines its strategic direction and talent line-up for the following year.
The program has already been undergoing a period of instability and transition. Beyond Davies’ exit, the show is preparing for the temporary absence of sports presenter Danika Mason, who is set to take maternity leave later this year. The network has been actively testing a variety of potential replacements and guest hosts, including Nine personalities like Tom Steinfort and other industry figures, as it seeks to stabilize its morning offering in a highly competitive market.
