The U.S. military has utilized an advanced directed-energy weapon to down three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operated by Mexican drug cartels along the southern border. The engagements, which took place between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, represent a significant escalation in the domestic deployment of high-energy laser systems to counter illicit cross-border operations.
According to reports initially published by CBS News, the operations were conducted by U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) using an “Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser System.” Major General Curtis Taylor, commander of the southern border’s Joint Task Force, confirmed the incidents in an official statement, emphasizing that cartel networks are increasingly utilizing drones to spy on law enforcement and facilitate human smuggling.
Countering Cartel Air Surveillance
“Cartel networks are increasingly employing unmanned aircraft systems to facilitate illicit human-smuggling and actively spy on our personnel and law enforcement partners,” Maj. Gen. Taylor stated. “By integrating layered countermeasures alongside advanced directed-energy capabilities like this laser system, we have made it clear that we will not tolerate hostile surveillance.”
While military officials declined to specify whether the drone intercepts occurred within American or Mexican airspace, a military spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that the actions “were taken in coordination with all partners operating along the border.” This indicates close communication with Mexican authorities and domestic border security agencies, though the specific rules of engagement remain classified.
A History of Operational Challenges
The successful deployment of directed-energy weapons on the domestic border follows a series of highly publicized setbacks. In February, the Pentagon deployed a similar laser system to intercept unidentified aerial targets, which led to the emergency closure of a major civilian airport and widespread travel disruptions. The targets were later identified as harmless party balloons.
Just weeks after the balloon incident, another laser engagement resulted in the downing of a drone. However, post-operation analysis revealed that the military had accidentally targeted and destroyed a UAV belonging to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) rather than a hostile cartel aircraft. Citing operational security and ongoing missions, USNORTHCOM has refused to release further technical details regarding the latest cartel drone intercepts, though officials expressed confidence that the correct targets were engaged this time.
The Economic Paradigm of Directed Energy
The deployment of high-energy lasers represents a fundamental shift in the economics of airspace defense. While the initial acquisition and development of directed-energy systems are capital-intensive, the operational cost of firing a laser is exceptionally low—costing as little as $13 per shot. This stands in stark contrast to traditional man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) or surface-to-air missiles, which cost hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of dollars per intercept.
This cost asymmetry has become a defining feature of modern conflict, as demonstrated on the battlefields of Ukraine, where cheap, commercial-off-the-shelf drones have routinely bypassed or exhausted expensive air defense networks. The global race for directed-energy capabilities is accelerating. The United Kingdom recently announced plans to deploy its DragonFire laser weapon on Royal Navy destroyers by 2027, while China has reportedly developed a backpack-sized, man-portable anti-drone laser system capable of neutralizing targets at distances of up to 1,600 feet. The successful neutralization of the three cartel drones along the southern border suggests that the U.S. military is actively transitioning these advanced capabilities from experimental testing to active tactical operations.
