Woodville-West Torrens has cemented its place in history, securing its first-ever Hostplus SANFLW premiership. Following a dominant 2026 campaign that saw the side finish as minor premiers, the Eagles overcame Norwood in a decisive Grand Final encounter at Alberton Oval. This victory marks a significant milestone for the club, which has been building its culture and list depth since entering the league in 2019.
For Eagles coach Narelle Smith, the win represents the culmination of years of persistent effort. Smith, who guided the team through the challenges of being an expansion club, noted that the heartbreak of previous near-misses served as a catalyst for this year’s success. The Eagles’ squad, which boasts an average age of just 22, demonstrated composure throughout the season, characterized by a potent offense led by 2026 AAMI Leading Goal Kicker Klaudia O’Neill, who finished the minor round with a league-record 33 goals.
The Road to the Grand Final
The Grand Final was the fourth meeting between these two rivals in 2026. While Norwood had successfully challenged the Eagles during the home-and-away season—securing an 11-point victory in Round 9 and a commanding 38-point win in Round 14—the Eagles proved their tactical evolution by winning the crucial Second Semi-Final two weeks prior to the decider. That 15-point victory earned the Eagles a week off, allowing them to enter the final match with fresh legs and a clear tactical advantage.
Norwood, under the guidance of first-year coach Ben ‘Rex’ Hunt, completed a remarkable turnaround after finishing seventh in 2025. The Redlegs’ campaign was anchored by 2026 Best and Fairest winner Jade Halfpenny, whose leadership and midfield dominance were pivotal to the club’s resurgence. Despite the loss, the Redlegs showcased the rise of young talent, including 16-year-old Lani Cocks and defensive pillars Ella Anderson and Mia Wood, signaling a bright future for the Norwood program.

Both clubs demonstrated why they were the league’s top two scoring teams, with the Eagles maintaining a 53.1 per cent scoring accuracy throughout the season compared to Norwood’s 46.4 per cent.
