The hit survival reality series Alone Australia is set to return for its fourth season on July 15, with a significant shift in location that producers describe as the “polar opposite” of previous iterations. Moving from the Australian wilderness to the Arctic Circle in northern Finland, the new season places 10 contestants on the traditional lands of the Sami people to face extreme environmental conditions.
Executive producer Riima Daher stated that while the core psychological and survival elements remain, the Arctic environment introduces a unique set of obstacles. Contestants must navigate a landscape where local wildlife, such as reindeer, are protected as livestock of the Sami herders, and where the transition into winter makes traditional food procurement significantly more difficult as lakes freeze and vegetation disappears.
Participants were informed of the general move to the north upon application, but the exact location remained confidential until ten days before their departure, limiting specific preparation. Among the contestants is 35-year-old Dylan, a Tasmanian-raised Palawa man and former military member. Reflecting on the experience, Dylan noted that despite his background in hunting and fishing, the Arctic climate required a high level of rapid adaptability. “The procurement of food can be very challenging, and very frustrating, when it’s somewhere you haven’t tried to survive before,” he said.
Beyond the physical struggle, the show continues to highlight the psychological toll of prolonged isolation. For Dylan, the experience served as a catalyst for reevaluating his work-life balance and the importance of family time. The season premiere is scheduled for 7:30 pm on July 15, airing on SBS and available via SBS On Demand.
