Amazon has officially launched the 4th-generation Echo Show 8, a significant hardware update aimed at integrating the company’s evolving Alexa+ AI service. According to reports from PCWorld, the new model moves away from the previous wedge-shaped design in favor of a spheroid base that creates a floating-display aesthetic.
The device is powered by the custom AZ3 Pro processor, specifically engineered to improve the responsiveness and accuracy of the “Alexa” wake word and the AI-driven Alexa+ features. While the 3rd-generation model relied on a passive bass radiator, this iteration introduces a 2.8-inch woofer, offering a marked improvement in audio performance.
Connectivity remains a priority, with the device acting as a hub for Zigbee, Matter, and Amazon Sidewalk protocols. However, the hardware update comes with a notable trade-off for privacy-conscious users: the physical camera shutter present on the 3rd-gen model has been removed. Additionally, Amazon has confirmed that while Alexa+ was previously in a free “early access” phase, it is now transitioning to a subscription-based model, included as a benefit for Prime members or available for $19.99 monthly for non-subscribers.
