Apple has moved to address the logistical challenges of multi-device ownership with the introduction of “iPhone Handoff” in the upcoming iOS 27 release. Spotted in the eighth beta and verified via Xcode 27 testing, this feature allows users to link a primary iPhone with a secondary companion device, sharing a single phone number and cellular plan at the network level. Unlike existing continuity features that rely on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth relays, this integration operates natively through dual eSIM configurations.
The feature, which was briefly teased during the WWDC 2026 keynote, marks a significant shift in how Apple manages cellular identity. By designating a “main” iPhone to manage cellular settings, the system allows the companion device to remain fully connected to the network even when the primary handset is powered down. This functionality effectively eliminates the need for manual SIM swapping or maintaining separate, costly cellular lines for backup devices.
Carrier Dependencies and Deployment
While the technical framework resides within iOS 27, the success of iPhone Handoff is contingent on carrier-side support. Early reports indicate that major international providers, specifically T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany, are expected to be the inaugural partners supporting this network-level sharing. Users will manage the configuration directly within the Settings > Cellular menu, where they can add the companion eSIM and synchronize their active services.
Industry analysts suggest that this feature is particularly timely given the anticipation surrounding Apple’s first foldable handset, the iPhone Ultra. As users adopt specialized hardware alongside their traditional flagships, the ability to transition identity seamlessly between devices becomes a value-add for the ecosystem. Apple has also informed developers of an “iPhone quick switch” protocol, which facilitates the transfer of login credentials and persistent application states, ensuring that the transition between handsets remains frictionless.
The Broader Ecosystem Stakes
