Apple (AAPL) has reclaimed the title of the world’s most valuable public company, surpassing Nvidia (NVDA) following a record-high close on Monday. According to Yahoo Finance data, Apple shares rose over 1%, bringing the company’s market capitalization to approximately $4.94 trillion, while Nvidia stood at $4.75 trillion.

The shift in market leadership reflects a growing investor preference for companies that maintain disciplined capital expenditure (capex) strategies. While tech peers like Alphabet and Tesla have recently ramped up spending to fuel their AI and robotics infrastructure, Apple’s capex has notably declined over the past three quarters. Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, noted that Apple’s measured approach to AI spending is increasingly viewed by the market as a strategic strength rather than a weakness, allowing the company to avoid potential “capex pitfalls” that have pressured the stock prices of other AI-heavy competitors.

Apple’s financial performance is set to be a focal point this Thursday, when the company reports its quarterly earnings after the closing bell. Investors are expected to monitor the progress of “Apple Intelligence” features, specifically looking for evidence that the company can scale these AI integrations without a substantial increase in infrastructure costs or a negative impact on operating margins.

This week’s earnings call carries additional significance as it will be the final session for Tim Cook as CEO. Cook is scheduled to step down on September 1 to transition into his new role as executive chairman, officially passing leadership responsibilities to hardware engineering veteran John Ternus.
